If you're looking for a nutritious feed on the pointy end of the Mornington Peninsula, then Raw on Rye with it's extensive vegan, gluten free and raw menu might just save the day. 

We had lunch on our minds when we visited Raw on Rye, but noted for next time the vegan 'Seasonal fruit waffles' ($11 GF) on offer for breakfast, as well as 'Caramalised buckinis' ($6 GF) which is organic activated buckwheat with raw organic maca powder and your choice of almond or rice milk.

We gave the colourful 'Raw pizza and salad' ($11.50 GF) a whirl, which had a tasty tomato and basil topping with nut cheese, olives and sundried tomato. The broccoli in a tahini sauce was the stand out salad and the 'Raw tortilla wrap' with asparagus, avocado and capsicum filling was a unique take on a safe dish.

The raw vegan 'Quiche & salad' ($14 GF) filled with spinach and nut cheese wasn't available on our visit but sounds very tempting, as does the 'Raw nachos, sprout dip and salad' ($11.50) and the 'Raw cheese platter for 2' ($16) - served with fruit, veg and crackers.

For dessert we had a truly wonderful slice of raw 'Chocolate orange cheesecake' ($7 GF), primarily made of cashews. The 'Raw chocolate mousse' ($7 GF) in an apricot base was richer and heavier and didn't quite compete with the champion cheesecake.

Coffee and a huge range of chai and other teas are on offer, however soy is off the menu. You can have almond or rice milk which doesn't make the creamiest of lattes (in my humble opinion), so perhaps stick with a herbal tea concoction when you visit. While Raw on Rye has taken a soy free stance (even for organic soy), it surprisingly hasn't ditched the dairy which is a bit confusing.

Must Try: The raw cheesecake!

Quirks: Don't come here if you're in a rush (there is actually a warning on the menu about this!)

The majority of Melbourne vegans need no introduction to the wholesome and delicious food on offer at Yong Green Food, and the midweek queues out the door are testament to the fact that the word has truly gotten around!

Yong Green Food offers an extensive all vegetarian (mostly vegan) menu with an abundance of gluten free options - along with raw, organic and biodynamic dishes. On our recent visit, we opted for the 'Oyster Mushroom Calamari' (GF $10.50), which was so incredible that I fear I won't try other menu options in the future in case they don't live up to this dish! The organic king oyster mushrooms are deep fried in organic rice butter (drool…) and served with salad, jalapeno marinara and vegan aioli sauces - clearly this dish is a 'must-try'.

Another delight from the snack menu are the 'Fried Nori Rolls' (GF $12.50) which are long, thin rice battered fried nori rolls of mung bean noodles, tofu and veggies. As stunning as this dish was, it didn't pip the oyster mushroom calamari at the post.

For mains, my sidekick gave the hearty 'Japanese Curry' ($15.50) a go - which had potato, carrot, mushroom, peas and sliced soy beef in a mild curry sauce with biodynamic brown rice. I'm not sure how many Japanese curries he's tried, but he did proclaim it the best he's had, which is a pretty damn encouraging recommendation.

I went for the most medicinally dangerous sounding dish on the menu - the 'Macro Dragon Bowl' (GF $18), without onion and garlic (OGF optional), which is a truly nutritious delight of biodynamic brown rice topped with assorted vegetables (including amazing shitake mushrooms), organic tempeh, seaweed and lemon tahini cream. As if all that doesn't sound fulfilling enough, the dragon bowl is also served with miso soup.

We took home a sneaky slice of organic 'Raw Chocolate Cheesecake' (GF $8.50) which is predominately made of cashew nuts, and I liked that it didn't have the strong coconut oil aftertaste that some raw chocolate desserts can have. We also wanted a slice of the organic 'Raw Pecan Pie' with cashew cream ($9) but alas, it's high demand had caused a sell out - which was no real problem for us really, because we'll be back at Yongs in no time.

Baskets of organic fruit and vegies adorn the footpath outside The Bear Cafe on Brunswick Street, and once inside we discover that the cafe is also home to "Animal Lovers by Neo Tokyo's" retail store (which Melbourne vegans know of largely due to those towels in the last World Vegan Day showbag!). The important bit to note though, is that The Bear Cafe has an all vegan food menu!

All day breakfast options are a feature and include 'Homemade museli' ($7) with fruit, nuts and coconut yogurt, 'Fruit toast' ($5.50), Avocado and chilli on toast ($7) and the big ticket item, 'The Big Bear breakfast' ($12.50). With baked beans, mushrooms, scrambled tofu and guacamole topped with dukkah, the Big Bear breakfast is a hearty winner and a fair price to boot.

Also on the menu are a selection of toasties which all list cheese as an ingredient, and luckily for us (and for the cows), it's vegan cheese! You can order a cheese and tomato version known as the 'The Classic' ($6), a 'Mitey' ($6.50) with cheese and vegemite or a J.P's garden' ($6.50) with cheese, mushroom, roasted peppers and caramelized onion. My sidekick went for the 'Double decker' ($10.50) which, with vegan cheese, baked beans, mushrooms, scrambled tofu and guacamole is basically the Big Bear breakfast condensed down into one mega sandwich - so needless to say, he loved it.

Some specials of 'Organic pumpkin and coconut soup' and 'Organic tomato and basil soup' served with bread of your choice (quinoa and pumpkin bread were two options I recall) ($8.50) also deserve a mention for a good wintery lunch option.

If your sweet tooth leaves you wanting more, you can grab a Mr Nice Guy ($4.50) or Merry ($3.60) cupcake, a Tinkernicks Cookie ($3.50) or some (incredibly amazing) raw Pana Chocolate ($7.60). Homemade muffins ($3.50) and homemade banana bread with nuttelex ($3.50) is also on the sweets menu.

I had a soy latte ($3.30 - 30c soycharge for Bonsoy) which was pretty good, albeit a little weak. Dairy makes an appearance for the hot drinks, hence the soycharge mention.

A trip to Frankston to meet a brand new baby boy was the perfect opportunity to also check out the 'much loved by locals' vegetarian cafe Aum Shanti. 

Aum Shanti Vegetarian Cafe & Art Gallery has such an earthy, homely feel that you'd be forgiven for thinking you were in the main street of Daylesford as opposed to seaside 'Franga'. There is a lovely array of homemade meals and salads to choose from in the glass cabinet, or you can order funky pies ($5.50), wraps ($8), sandwiches ($8-8.50), soup of the day ($9 and always vegan) or a lentil and chickpea burger ($9) off the menu. Sourdough toast is the main vegan breakfast option so you'd be better off making your visit to Aum Shanti a lunch date.

I had a 'Lentil & mushroom shepherds pie' with a scoop of quinoa salad ($12, GF) and it was a truly comforting homemade meal. The quinoa salad had a great crunch thanks to the addition of toasted seeds. A non vegan friend also partook in this dish and was as equally impressed.

There are plenty of vegan sweets on offer including lemon melting moments ($2), Mr Nice Guy cupcakes ($4.50), an assortment of chocolates, and some raw desserts by Naked Treaties. We gave the raw choc mint slice ($7) a whirl and it was reminiscent of the peppermint and chocolate layer cake at Shoku Iku - very rich so ideal to share. The Nickers Bar ($4) - a raw, vegan, sugar free 'snickers', was an ideal accompaniment to my soy latte ($4 - includes 50c soycharge). If soy milk isn't your thing, you can also have your coffee made with organic rice or almond milk, which will also attract an extra 50 cents - as does organic coffee.

Along with being a great lunch place, Aum Shanti stocks a few vegan products which you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else on the peninsula.

Notzarella, Castlemaine dips, Sweet Freedom 'vegan honey', Plamil organic chocolate spread, vegan jelly crystals and vegan condensed milk are among the loot. This cafe is a shining light in Frankston, and we're sure it will continue to be for many years to come.

Invita Living Food is an all vegetarian cafe that has been feeding shoppers at the Queen Victoria Market for a good 10 years. To this day, Invita is still going strong by dishing up hearty vegan lunches and delicious vegan sweets.

Invita has a great range of ready made vegan salads, soups (the potato and leek is tops), pies and wraps (not all are vegan, but all ingredients are well labelled) to eat in or takeaway. A recent visit saw me choose a quinoa salad, along with a roast pumpkin and walnut salad ($6.50 each), which made for a very tasty lunch. 

Also on offer, for those eating in, is a lentil shepherds pie, a tofu burger (tofu burger pattie - no bun) or rice balls - all of these options come with salad and are all gluten and wheat free to boot. Oh, and there's a scrambled tofu ($12.50) on the breakfast menu too.

When it comes to sweets, there are also plenty of vegan options. The berry cheesecake ($6.50 takeaway, gluten free) is highly recommended, and must surely be one of the first ever vegan cheesecakes available in Melbourne (I've been eating it for years!!). Other delights include some seriously good berry muffins (which manage to have a crispy outside and a dense but fluffy middle - $4), lemon poppy seed cake and vanilla bliss balls ($3, gluten free). There was a really impressive looking vegan chocolate cake (gluten free) in the window last time which I'm yet to try.

If you make it to Invita, be sure to pay a visit to The Land of Soy and Honey in the deli section of the Queen Vic Market for some grocery supplies. They stock some of the best tofu, tempeh and burger products around - all which can be difficult to find in supermarkets. I picked up a large organic smoked tofu ($7.30), some Tallyho Farm organic tempeh ($7.30 and proclaimed by me as the BEST tempeh), and some Blue Lotus tandoori marinated organic tofu ($4.90). They also usually have my favourite ever vegan burgers which are the Tallyho Farm Soy Burgers (around $7).

We'd heard on the vegan grapevine that a new vegetarian restaurant had opened in the CBD, and so like moths to a flame, we found ourselves at Gong dè Lin Chinese vegetarian restaurant last Friday night.

Gong dè Lin is a bit off the beaten track (if that's possible in the CBD?!), given that it's necessary to take a lift to level 3 from the front of another restaurant at 264 Swanston Street (yes that is the old address of the Shaft Adult Cinema, you perverts). The restaurant seating is predominantly booths which we liked, especially if you end up in a window seat overlooking Swanston Street like we did - not only do we get a good view over the Swanston St rooftops, but the busker below provided a good soundtrack for the evening.

The menu is about a dozen pages long with ample mock meat and mock seafood options, as well as numerous mushroom and vegetable dishes. We decided to share some Cold Mushroom and Spinach Wontons ($5), the Soya Bean Fillets ($16.80), Sauteed Sliced Mountain Mushrooms with a Hot and Spicy Sauce ($16.80) and Sauteed Spinach ($14.80). The wontons were delicious in their sweet soy sauce, which I preferred over the other accompaniment, a diluted satay sauce. However, at $5 for six of these, you can't go too wrong.

I was expecting the soy bean fillets to be fillets of tofu, however they were more akin to crumbed crispy fried fillets of vegan ham and were easily the highlight of the whole meal. The sauteed sliced mountain mushrooms with hot and spicy sauce were definitely hot and spicy and more to my sidekicks level of tolerance. The mushroom in this dish was pretty amazing though, with a succulence and texture that could lend it to be mistaken as a mock chicken. We ordered sauteed spinach to ensure we had a balanced meal and while it had a good flavour, there was an over abundance of stalks, which not only made it tedious to eat but created some competition for the leafy bits.

There's plenty more on the menu that we'll have to go back and try. Some other dishes that jumped out to us include Sauteed Vegetarian Abalone with Broccoli ($20.80), Vegetarian Goose ($12.80), Deep Fried Shredded Black Mushroom with Salt & Pepper ($18.80) and Vegetarian Sea Cucumber with Shanghai Greens ($22..80). The menu doesn't highlight which dishes are vegan, and even though most dishes are, make sure you check when ordering.

(while this does appear to be Gong dè Lin's website, it's a shocker which doesn't even spell the restaurant name correctly...)

What do you do when you're out in the 'vegan-friendly-eatery-starved' eastern suburbs, and dinner time creeps up on you? You swing by the all vegetarian Malaysian restaurant 'Vegie Mum' in Doncaster of course!

The menu here is really large (the menu numbering goes up to 98!) and all dishes without egg are vegan, aside from the honey 'chicken', due to… aah, honey. There are plenty of mock options including seafood, duck, chicken, beef/lamb and pork. There are also soups, hot pots, noodles, rice dishes, a variety of vegetable dishes, entrees and roti. This much choice makes my brain hurt!

The dining area is more functional than pleasing aesthetically, which was neither here nor there for us as we were in the market for takeaway. On recommendation from the staff we ordered the Crispy Sweet and Sour Abalone Mushroom ($13.50), and also chose the Roasted 'Duck' ($14), Chinese Mushroom with Pok Choy ($15.50) and some Satay Skewers (2 sticks $4) as an entree.

The crispy sweet and sour abalone mushroom dish was indeed a standout (salty, fried goodness!) and would be a good option in lieu of a mock dish as it's something a bit special. The roasted 'duck' is possibly the best mock duck I've had, it was crispy and succulent and the plum sauce topped it off nicely. The chinese mushroom and pok choy was fine, albeit a little soggy from it's trip in the takeaway container and the satay skewers were just ok (I found the peanut sauce to be a bit bland).

I would definitely go to Vegie Mum again if I was out that way, and I reckon Doncaster residents are  darn lucky to have this place on their doorstep.

Note: No onion or garlic is used at Vegie Mum. Mock products are made using wheat gluten and soy protein.

If Little Deer Tracks isn't the best choice for breakfast or lunch north of Bell Street, then I'm not sure where is! Ever since this all vegetarian cafe opened back in 2011, it's been one of our favourite breakfast/brunch/lunch haunts.

My 'usual' breakfast is the avocado on house sourdough toast ($8.50) with a house hash brown ($3), sauteed mushrooms ($3.50) and grilled asparagus ($3.50). It's always delicious, but I must say that it's not until right now that I am actually realising that it's also quite an expensive breakfast at $18.50... I also had gluten free bread ($2.50) last time which would have made my 'usual' $21. Oh well, as I said, it's always delicious! 

Due to a late night, my last breakfast visit turned into a lunch sojourn, so I tried the handmade organic potato and spelt gnocchi with fresh tomato, basil, garlic and olive oil sauce ($18.50). The sauce is freshly made with beautiful chunks of ripe tomato and the gnocchi really were the 'light fluffy pillows' that we're told all good gnocchi should be!

My sidekick had his usual of penne puttanesca with capers, olives, chili and oregano ($12.50) which sees him well satisfied until dinner. The lunch menu starts at 11am so we're often heading to "Little Deery" late morning so sidekick can have his pasta breakfast!

There are some dishes that are so close to being vegan but aren't, such as the almond crusted eggplant cutlet with hummus & salad ($18.50). It sounds so vegan but unfortunately an egg wash is getting in the way of this food fantasy. Booo!

There is usually a vegan cake to look out for in the cake cabinet ($6.50 per slice) and the vegan lemon bomb biscuits are pretty good. Little Deer Tracks also make a very fine coffee ($3.30) with Bonsoy (.50c).

Veggie Kitchen - Intention of Love is such an adorably off-putting name for a restaurant, we thought it was about time we tried it.

Veggie Kitchen is all vegetarian (der!), mainly vegan (or vegan optional) and Taiwanese. The menu is quite large with lots of really tempting entree goodies like satay skewers, dumplings, veggie buns, yam spring rolls, tofu rolls and more ($4.80-$6.80). We tried the Veggie Cutlet (2 pcs $6.80) - crunchy crumbed nori wrapped delicacies of soy prawn and cabbage. I've never being down the 'soy prawn road' before so it was a nice surprise to find these so tasty.

I also went for a Bean Curd Burger ($8.80) which was layers of sweet beancurd, marinated tofu, crispy lettuce and tomato skewered together into a burger. It's juiciness made it delicious, but also messy to eat, so be prepared with a napkin before tucking in. It's a full on hit of marinated and fried tofu and while I'm glad I tried it, it was quite rich, so I think I'd rather take pity on my belly and go halves with someone next time.

My sidekick had Hong Shao Tofu with Taiwanese Shitake Mushrooms ($12.80) with black rice (2.80). Whilst you couldn't fault the homemade tofu, the dish only had two small slices of shitake mushroom in it which was pretty lousy. The wholesome black rice side dish made up for the lack of fungi though.

There were also vegan desserts including Tofu Pudding, Black Sesame Pudding (both $4.80) which I look forward to trying next time. Mister Nice Guy cupcakes were also available.

Monk Bodhi Dharma has possibly ruined all weekend breakfasts for me - simply because their food and coffee is sooo good that we'll never be able to go anywhere else again.

Big call? Well yes it is, but mainly because MBD is in Balaclava and too far away from us to visit every single weekend. The fact that we do make the trek regularly though, is testament to the fact that they really know what they're doing. The menu is all vegetarian (dairy available, no eggs) but the majority of choices are vegan and everything is vegan optional.

I always get a vegan version of "The Avo" ($15.50) which is smashed avocado with mint, chilli and lemon on top of a vegan cashew sour cream spread on organic sourdough. The avocado mix is always stacked generously high and really is the most special avocado on toast I've had.

My sidekick always gets the vegan version of Umami Mushrooms ($18.50) which is a rather decadent mix of creamy slow roasted oyster, shitake and swiss brown mushrooms on house made pumpkin, spinach and sundried tomato polenta bread. The vegan cashew sour cream also makes an appearance on top of the polenta bread. It's just as delicious as it sounds and looks a work of art to boot.

If you visit Monk Bodhi Dharma it's also worth checking out the Coles on Camden Street, Balaclava for vegan Vienetta's (about $17 each) and other non dairy ice-cream treats and frozen delights such as vegan boreks. Rishon Foods at 23 William Street, Balaclava also has plenty of vegan foods including ice-cream desserts and homemade fresh fruit sorbets. They also stock some great vegan whipping cream (should you need to make a vegan chocolate ripple cake!) and plenty of other goodies. Rishon is closed Saturdays but open Sundays.
