It was a long time between visits to The Cornish Arms Hotel, so we'll forgive ourselves for accidentally turning up on a Wednesday night, which is ironically the weekly (and very busy) "Cheap Steak Night". Nevertheless, the extensive menu of vegan pub food was still on offer, so we went ahead and dined amongst the corpse munchers.

There are well over a dozen vegan options on offer at The Cornish Arms, including four vegan pizzas ($11 + $3 GF), one of which is the aptly named 'Bbq meat loathers', which boasts all the faux meats. There are three vegan burgers (w/ chips) including a 'Vegan chicken burger' ($18) with a southern fried mock chicken fillet with 'facon', 'cheez', avocado, lettuce and tomato with chipotle aioli. 

Other vegan pub classics include a 'Vegan parma' ($18) and 'Vegan beer-battered fish & chips' ($19) with bean curd 'fish' pieces cooked in Coopers Pale Ale batter with chips, salad & vegan tartare. The tartare is fantastic and compliments the crispy fish pieces nicely, but I'm not a huge fan of the chips unfortunately - perhaps a bit more seasoning would make them better. The 'Vegan Double Down' ($20), otherwise known as the vegan KFC option, consists of 'cheez', 'facon' and tomato sandwiched between two southern fried mock chicken fillets, served with mash 'n' gravy and slaw. Those on a health kick need not apply.

Along with the pizzas, gluten free vegans can enjoy a 'Thai salad' ($18) with tempeh or a Spicy lentil burger' ($19).

There are a couple of vegan cheesecakes ($9) available, including 'Cookies & cream' and 'Peanut butter' flavours. I would have tried one, but the Cornish doesn't allow takeaways and there was no way I could tackle such a dessert so soon after the heavy 'fish and chips'. 

There are also a dozen or so vegan beers and ciders and around six vegan wines to choose from.

Sweetwater Inn is a new faux pub in South Yarra that has been given a leg up by Shannon Martinez - the brainchild of vegan heaven South. Shannon will be at Sweetwater Inn until May (although her menu will remain), before she embarks on her own all vegan deli/eatery. We checked out the food at Stillwater over the Easter break.

We started with the 'Bubble and squeak croquettes' ($10) which are vegan by default, and served with Shannon's own herbed aioli - which she plans to bottle and sell in her new deli - and which will surely become a staple condiment in every Melbourne vegan household! The croquettes were soooo delicious; crispy on the outside with fluffy potato, carrots and peas on the inside which coupled with the incredible aioli, we couldn't find fault.

Next in line were the much blogged about vegan 'BBQ prawn skewers' ($15, gluten free), served with aioli, grilled lemon, chips and salad. The prawns which are barbequed with garlic and herbs, are light and fresh and are complemented with a good squeeze of the grilled lemon. The beer battered chips (using Fosters which is indeed vegan) are equal to the famed Gasometer chips and the dressed salad and addictive aioli seal the deal.

My sidekick couldn't look beyond the vegan optional (VO) 'Chip buttie with the lot' ($12), no matter how much I tried to sway him towards the VO 'Fosters fish and chips' ($16). To our delight, Shannon kindly provided a piece of vegan fish (nori wrapped and battered soy fish) for him to try and after all these years, he is now a faux fish convert. The chip buttie consisted of a soft burger bun, stacked with crispy chips, vegan bacon, beetroot and vegan cheese slice - all topped with tomato sauce and accompanied by pickled onions and dressed salad. A simple dish that hit the spot.

There are some more vegan options on the menu which we'll back to try. The vegan 'Pineapple and chipotle glazed ham steak' ($15, gluten free) was sold out when we visited, and there is also a VO 'Rissole sandwich' ($15), a VO 'Crispy calamari salad' ($16, gluten free) and a VO pie (c/o La Panella) floater ($16).

Whilst Sweetwater Inn doesn't have a full vegan menu like South (and there are some off putting skulls and a cow hide on display), it will still be a welcome addition for residents who are otherwise relatively starved of good vegan options in the area.

I'm sure that many of you need no introduction to The Gasometer Hotel, a friendly pub in Collingwood with an extensive vegan / vegan optional (VGO) menu.

For those of you that know the Gasometer, but haven't eaten there in a little while, you'll be happy to hear that a new addition to the menu, 'Gas Vegan Nachos' ($20), are incredible. The Gasometer have had vegan nachos on their menu in the past and we haven't cared for them - but this version is a winner. The nacho chips are homemade and reminiscent of delicious crispy roti bread in chip form. The topping is a seitan and mixed bean chilli with vegan feta (incredible), sour cream, guacamole and salsa. These nachos are really worth trying. 

Other favourites on the menu are the Buffalo Tofu Strips ($12 GFO) which are deliciously smokey and juicy and come with vegan ranch dipping sauce. The Gasometer is well known for their near-perfect hot chips, which makes the Poutine ($12 VGO) another popular choice; and let's face it - who doesn't love chips covered in cheesy sauce and rich brown gravy!? The Spanish Mushrooms ($12 GFO VGO) are also highly recommended - they come in a smoked paprika and garlic cream sauce, finished with sweet Spanish sherry.  

There are plenty of other vegan mains (and desserts!) to choose from including Vegan Chicken & Waffles ($20), Vegan BBQ Ribs ($18), Arepas with Red Chilli Seitan & Salsa ($20) and the Southern Fried Chicken Burger ($18) to name a few. Basically, vegans are extremely well catered for and you should get yourself down there!

Former owners of The Arthouse are bringing new life to Footscray - not only through live music, but through the magical qualities of vegan pizza!

This pub's menu is currently really simple with homemade corn crust pizza, empanadas, fries and tacos (on Tuesdays). We tried the Veg Ham & Cheese ($10) and the pizza special of the week "The Holy Christo" ($11) which had lots of veggies and chilli harissa. The Veg Ham & Cheese was really simple (just the way I like my pizza…) although the mock ham was probably better described as mock chicken I'd say. 

The pizzas are large and great value and the staff are happy to box up what you can't eat so you can take it home. Good old fashioned service indeed.

An even bigger winner at the Reverence are the homemade vegan empanadas (2 for $6). We tried the black bean ones, which coupled with the creamy dipping sauce (vegan) were absolutely delicious. A potato and vegan chorizo version is also on the menu but wasn't available on our recent visit (we'll be back to try these!). We also had a bowl of spicy fries ($6) which owed their greatness largely to the vegan homemade aioli that accompanied them.

Word has it that the Reverence is currently working on a full mexican menu which will have many vegan options. Footscray locals must be rejoicing!
