If you like the sound of walking the dog* in a beautiful garden with a vegan toastie or sweet treat in tow, then head to Queens Park. This all vegan hole-in-the-wall whipped me up a 'Fried Chick'n Sammich' ($15) with schnitzel, pickle, slaw and mayo; it was fresh and tasty, although the schnitzel was more akin to Fry's than the Temple of Seitan action I was secretly dreaming of.

A large array of vegan cakes are on offer, along with hot drinks and smoothies & shakes, and some casual outdoor seating.

Loving Hut is an all vegan restaurant chain with over 200 stores worldwide, each offering different menus and qualities of service, but all united in the goal of bringing affordable vegan meals to the public. 

Behind the sect-like glowing signage, yellow walls, plastic bamboo, and tv screen illuminating Batman cartoons (on mute thankfully), Northcote Loving Hut is a damn good place for a consistently delicious meal, and it's huge interior makes it an easy choice for last minute dining if you have a big group to feed.

The menu offers a boundless array of everything that seems non-vegan at a glance. We're talking about dishes such as 'Southern fried chicken' ($16) (or 'The volcano' ($17) if your partial to smothering said dish in hot sauce), 'Lemon chicken' ($14), 'Katsu duck with plum sauce' ($14), 'Pan fried tuna fillet' ($13) and the list goes on and it's all vegan.

My favourite dish of the moment is 'Bambam' ($15), which is deep fried eggplant or prawns with creamy sriracha infused mayo on top, and puffed tofu. Loving Hut also do an authentic vegan 'Silken tofu pad thai' ($13), a classic 'Curry laksa' ($12) and various rice, noodle and vegetable dishes. There are almost 50 items on the menu, so I won't even attempt to list them all, but I will let you know that many can be ordered as gluten free, onion free and garlic free.

Desserts are also an option, with Zebra dream organic coconut ice-cream scoops, banana fritters, and an array of cakes and La Panella Bakery style baked goods, such as lemon tarts and caramel slice.

Head to the big freezer to secure a bulk pack of vegan hot dogs or bacon (these ones aren't classified by the World Health Organisation as being group 1 carcinogens - yay!), and there's usually a good supply of veganpet and v-dog (which is hard to find) pet food to snap up for your fur kids.

Smith & Deli is an all vegan, New York style deli bought to life by our friends from Smith & Daughters. This is the place to stop by for bread, pastries, coffee, cheeses, meats (all vegan remember!), salads, soups, pies, meals to go and an incredible array of over 25 sandwiches.

Sandwiches are king at Smith & Deli and the menu may stun you with the sheer amount of options of available, so check it out before you go. The 'Rubenstein' ($15) is a good pick with pastrami, sauerkraut, pickles and Russian dressing on rye; or go for a 'Buffalo the Vampire Slayer' ($12) with buffalo tofu, ranch, shredded iceberg, carrot, onion and celery in a roll. Next time I think I'll channel Kevin and try the 'Home Alone' ($15) made up of turkey, roasted brussel sprouts, cranberry sauce, mashed potato & gravy, all on a roll. Gluten free bread is available for all sandwiches for an extra $2.

Some lighter options that are more in the breakfast camp are also on offer, including a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches ($8-$12), croissants, and chef Shannon Martinez's take on a popular fast food breakfast item with the 'Egg McMartinez' ($7) including egg, bacon and cheddar on an English muffin with your choice of sauce.

Meals to go, such as pizza ('pepperoni' $16), lasagne, pies (four different flavours everyday, in both single and family sizes), sausages, schnitzels, tofu and tempeh are all available.

The cabinets are full of sweet treats too, where (with options rotating daily) you might find 'Maple Bacon Donuts' ($5), 'Vanilla Slice ($6), 'Apple Pie Bars' ($5), 'Lemon Tarts' ($7) and much more.

Black coffee is $3.50 or $4 with non-dairy milk – or add an extra $2 for Smith & Deli's own fresh nut milk. The chai soy latte sweetened with agave nectar ($4) is great.

Supercharger is a completely vegan restaurant in the Emporium Melbourne food court. Yes, compassionate ladies and gents, we now have an all vegan restaurant in a food court - things are looking good for Melbourne.

Supercharger has a build your own bowl system which requires you to tick your selections off on a reuseable paper menu. Firstly you need to select two bases for your bowl, choosing from a couple of mashes, rices, quinoa or fresh baby spinach leaves. I recommend including 'mashed potato w/ mustard seeds' in your combo.

Next step is to decide how many items you want in your bowl (not including bases), you can have 4 items ($12), 5 items ($13) or 6 items ($14). Items include 'super smashes' such as 'green peas w/ avocado, lime, coconut oil & mint', 'super proteins' such as 'fresh tofu simmered in tom yum broth' (this got my tick of approval), 'super raws' including 'kale, red cabbage & shredded green apple w/ tahini sauce', 'super sauces' such as 'coconut yoghurt raita', 'super ferments' such as 'daikon & garlic' and 'super simmers' including 'dalika dahl w/ tumeric, cumin & ginger'.

'Super porridges' (all $6) are on offer too, including a 'Bircher muesli w/ orange juice, seasonal fruit & soy milk' and a savoury 'Jasmine rice congee w/ ginger & spring onion'.

Desserts are also not to be missed with a selection of raw cheesecakes by Evelyn Reid ($7) and some jars of 'Raw cocoa mousse w/ raspberry couli' ($6) amongst other delights.

The drinks on offer here create such a colourful display in the fridge that they're almost irresistible - they're not blended up until you order one, so you get to see the whole ingredients before the 'whizzing' process.

You only need to walk past Smith & Daughters on a weeknight to see that they’re not only leading the way in all vegan dining, but dining in general. Vegans and omnivores alike are flocking here for awesome food, super friendly service and a damn good vibe.

The Spanish and Mexican inspired all vegan dinner menu is an ever-evolving pursuit of perfection. Say goodbye to main meals, and hello to a vast selection of mouth-watering small plates to make your own smorgasbord. Choose from such delicacies as 'White truffle, forest mushroom pâté w/ caper berries, cornichons & toasted bread' ($15 GFO), 'Tuna & green pea croquettas w/ caper aioli' ($5 each) and the amazing 'Tortilla w/ garlic aioli' ($7 per slice).

If you’re more in the mood for salad, the 'Tacos con enslada' (GFO NFO $16)—a crisp tortilla basket filled w/ black beans, vegan chorizo, grilled corn, pickled jalapenos, shredded lettuce, pickled red cabbage and coriander cashew cream is a popular choice.

Life’s too short for regrets, so don’t skimp on a Smith & Daughter’s dessert—do try the 'Tarta de Chocolate Azteca' ($14), served with the most incredible fresh avocado ice cream or share some ‘Warm Spanish Donuts’ ($12) with quince and spiced sugar.

Spanish or Mexican Baked Omelettes ($16 GFO), ‘Spanish French Toast' ($16) and a 'Breakfast Burrito' ($15) w/ scrambled tofu, crispy vegan chorizo, black beans, garlic kale and guacamole are on offer for brunch on weekends only.

Coffee with your choice of soy, oat, coconut or almond+coconut milk is $4 or $3.50 (black).

P.S Thursday nights from 10pm-1pm are dedicated to Morrissey/Smith's tunes, 'moza-ritas' and late night vegan eats. 'So, please, please, please, let me, let me, let me eat all the vegan treats this time...'

Spot Burger (previously Il Gobbo) is an all vegan burger and hotdog joint (with some Mexican and Italian dishes too) in Essendon. It's opened up in front of Down to Earth Tattoos, who've also made the compassionate stance of using only vegan inks.

Everything is vegan, although the menu doesn't state it as such - so hopefully a few corpse eaters will dine here and be none the wiser. There are five burgers to choose from and I couldn't go past 'The Sailor Jerry' ($10) - a nori wrapped vegan fish patty with a tofutti cheese slice, lettuce, pickles, onion and herbed mayo. It was a delicious choice, especially thanks to that lovely herbed mayo.

My sidekick loves a chilli hit, so went for a 'Volcano Burger' ($10) which had an Il Gobbo patty (a bit like a LOTF patty), tofutti cheese slice, chilli sauce and jalapenos. He thoroughly enjoyed it, but being particularly hungry, wished it was a bit bigger. Perhaps he should have had 'The Spot Burger' ($14) which has a double Il Gobo patty, vegan cheese, vegan bacon, pickles, onion, ketchup and mayo. The 'Bogan Burger' ($10) also caught my eye to try next time, with vegan chicken, herbed mayo, lettuce, beetroot, cheese and pineapple ($10).

No burger is complete without a bowl of fries ($7 GF), and the Il Gobbo variety were well seasoned and hit the spot nicely. If you also fancy a soft drink (Papasito, Lemon Squash or Creaming Soda) then the 'meal deal special' of a burger/hotdog with fries and a can of soft drink for $15.95 is the most economical option.

There's still plenty for us to come back and sample at Il Gobbo, including 3 varieties of vegan hot dogs ($9.95), a vegan burrito ($12), vegan nachos ($12 GF), vegan lasagne ($13) and spaghetti ($13). There are no desserts on the menu (as yet anyway...) but you could opt for a chocolate, banana or raspberry 'Shake' ($6) if you needed a sugar fix.

Mister Nice Guy became known for their huge variety of vegan cupcakes when they first started getting their bake on back in 2010, however a visit to their bakeshop in Ascot Vale reveals that they have so much more to offer these days than cupcakes alone!

In addition to the cupcakes, the Ascot Vale bakeshop offers an array of dreamy all-vegan savoury options, with soy and gluten free options too. I'm a sucker for a bagel in any form, so was delighted to see a vegan 'BLT' ($8) on offer, as well as a vegan 'curried egg' bagel ($8). The BLT bagel was delicious with Cheatin' rashers and delicious mustardy mayo, along with the lettuce and tomato. The curried (tofu) egg bagel with homemade mayo, was also a delight, especially as I've never really tried a vegan curried egg alternative before. If you're after a gluten free bagel, (yes - they exist!) the cost is $9.

Other savoury options that have been popping up in the bakeshop are 'Dawgs in blankets' ($6.50) which are dough wrapped vegan hot dogs, 'Spinach cheezy scrolls' ($4.50) and the sensational cheezy garlic pockets ($5) which are doughy triangles filled with melty garlicky vegan cheese. Mm-mmm...

I can never go past a sweet treat at Mr Nice Guy and recently had my first 'Chocolate babka' ($4.50) which had swirls of chocolate through a lovely tender dough that easily pulled apart. The 'cheezecake' slices ($8) are also always tempting - especially if my favourite 'Peanut butter brownie' flavour is on offer.

Coffee is by Naked Espresso and you can choose from soy, almond, rice or hazelnut milk. The coffee is a little bitter for my taste, but the hot chocolate ($4.30) made with hazelnut milk is a decadent amazement. I'm also yet to try the homemade, self brewed chai-latte which I'm tipping to be a winner.

Shokuiku is a new raw, organic, macrobiotic, vegan eatery in Northcote that's created a flurry of curiosity amongst Melbourne's vegan community. Raw dining, where food is not heated above 48 degrees so that enzymes, vitamins and minerals are not destroyed, is a new experience for us, so we thought we'd better check out the April dinner menu in it's entirety in order to report back to you good (hearted) people.

Shoku iku is open for dinner only on Saturday nights at this stage and you must book a table if you want to partake. There are two choices available for each course (first courses $12, second courses $20, desserts $10 and side salads $9). We opted for the three course meal with side salad ($46) and were off to a great start with their 'Curried crepes w/ julienned apple and zucchini and plant-based yoghurt'. The vegan yoghurt made this dish something special.

A 'Whole tomato, stuffed w/ sunflower pate and served w/ walnut pesto' also arrived to compete with the crepes and it definitely held its own! The incredibly moreish walnut pesto (complete with garlic hit) gave the vegan yoghurt sauce a real run for it's money.

After a little wait, our main courses arrived complete with a side salad on each plate. The 'Vegetable ravioli, filled w/ plant based cream cheese and served w/ chunky tomato sauce' was accompanied by a huge serving of a 'green leafy salad w/ vegetable cous cous and red grapes w/ a fig and balsamic dressing'. The raw raviolis saw vegan cream cheese sandwiched between sliced radish and apple and it went down a treat, however the salad had copious amounts of a grated root vegetable (perhaps celeriac) masquerading as cous cous and while it was super vitamin hit, we couldn't quite stomach eating all of it.

The other main of 'Kelp noodle and vegetable pad thai w/ sweet and spicy almond sauce and activated teriyaki nuts and seeds' was more salty than sweet and spicy and I felt healthier just looking at all that kelp! On the side was a 'Marinated carrot ribbon salad w/ creamy curry spiced dressing' but again, there was rather a lot of it and there's only so much ‘carrot ribbon’ one can eat in a single sitting!

The evening peaked again when dessert arrived, delivering us an extraordinarily rich and creamy 'Peppermint and chocolate layer cake' along with 'Poached strawberries w/ lucuma (a subtropical fruit from Peru) and cupuacu (an Amazonian 'super fruit') sabayon and orange cream' which despite the extravagant description was a simple and refreshing dessert which was also garnished with strawberry leather (aka fruit rollup).

There are plenty of herbal teas ($3-3.50) on offer (warmed only) along with teeccino which is a herbal coffee served with freshly made almond milk or warmed cacao ($5). The teeccino and cocao is rather creatively warmed in a vitamix.

So, here's an embarrassing confession - this is the first time we've eaten at Las Vegan Cafe. As one of the only all vegan cafe's in Melbourne, it's crazy that we haven't been here before, let alone regularly. On this particular morning we went for breakfast AND to pick up our amazing Tofurkey for Christmas Day.

The first thing that impressed us about Las Vegan Cafe were the prices. Tofu Scramble or homemade Baked Beans on homemade sourdough is $7 and extras (tomato, mushrooms,  tempacon, baked beans and avocado) range between $1-2. We went for the Big Breakfast ($15) which is the Tofu Scramble with all the extras on Olive & Rosemary Sourdough and it was gooood! The 'tempacon' was smokey, crispy tempeh and was the absolute highlight, I could have eaten a whole bowl of it - seriously.

Naturesoy is used for the coffee which I'm not a great fan of. The coffee was good, but just not as great as it could it been if it was made with Bonsoy.

We were handed our tofurkey after breakfast and were shocked by the size and weight of it - it was huge! We were instructed to cook it for a further hour before serving and to baste it with a special herb-laden concoction that was provided.

The ultimate proof was in the eating and we were so impressed. It had the most beautiful stuffing - complete with cranberries and walnuts - and the basting gave it a lovely golden crispy crust. I ordered the tofurkey a few days in advance and it was $60 (serves 16 or more).

When dear friends of The Good Hearted got into a pickle and needed to order a last minute vegan birthday cake for their daughter's birthday party, Sweetie Pie & Cuddle Cakes came to the rescue.

I can't give Sweetie Pie & Cuddle Cakes a full review as I've only set eyes on the one cake, but I can give them a thumbs up for great service, as they were very accommodating with our friend's last minute request of a vegan rainbow cake. The cake looked like a child's dream - complete with sparkly, shimmery icing and four layers of brightly coloured cake. 

Sweetie Pie & Cuddle Cakes specialise in vegan cakes for people with dietary intolerances to nuts, wheat, gluten and soy. The vegan rainbow cake had delicious icing and was gluten free, which may have been why the cake was a little on the dense side. While the kids thought the rainbow cake was just fabulous, I think I'd like to try one of Sweetie Pie & Cuddle Cakes less colourful cakes (because I'm a boring adult…) - their Chocolate Beetroot Cake and Turkish Delight Cake sound very tempting.
