Wickens at Royal Mail Hotel Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

On winding down the distinctly native garden path to Wickens at the Royal Mail, the native bird chirps coming from speakers hidden in trees suggest that a live performance by actual birds couldn't be left to chance. Chef Robin Wickens wants this experience to be perfectly curated.

The dining room is moody and dimly lit, drawing our attention to the vast window framing Mount Sturgeon and the ancient gumtrees full of (real) birdlife. Italian hand-blown lights hover over impressive tables made of local solid sandstone, but unfortunately, animal leather placemats and chairs also take pride of place.

The Royal Mail Kitchen Garden is the most productive kitchen garden in Australia and provides all of the produce showcased in the five ($170) or eight-course ($195) degustations. We opted for eight courses (it ends up being more like 12) and ate like vegan royalty for I kid you not, over four hours.

The degustation starts with a series of canapes, such as the 'beetroot pop tart,' 'apple, watercress mustard cracker' and 'fermented radish, smoked maple with leek ash.' Funnily enough, though, it was the homemade sourdough bread that left the most profound impression, and we would go back again for that alone (ok, we may need to save for a bit first).

Other amazing dishes that came our way include 'chickpea pancake, spinach and tofu' and 'watercress custard, porridge oats, black garlic, and flowers.' We enjoyed no less than four deserts, including the playful 'jelly baby vegetables' and a unique 'green tomato on granola with sweet woodruff.'

Wickens at the Royal Mail Hotel was awarded 2 Hats in the 2019 Good Food Guide Awards, along with Regional Wine List of the Year.

Wickens at The Royal Mail isn't straight up vegan. Please specify vegan at the time of booking.

Vegan Food in St Kilda – with Melbourne Vegan Tours

Cafe, Gluten Free, Icecream, Licensed, Lunch, South, Vegan Tours, Vegan Tourism, St KildaThe Good HeartedComment

When Jess Ivers and Dan Pinne visited Paris and discovered that a vegan tour was on offer in the land of foie gras and buttery croissants, they thought, well, if you can have a vegan tour there, then you can definitely have one in vegan-friendly Melbourne. Soon after, in May 2018, Melbourne Vegan Tours was born.

We joined Jess on a vegan tour of St Kilda, meeting her at 2pm in front of iconic Luna Park. She’s down to earth and friendly, and as you’d expect on a vegan tour, the other attendees are the same. Our tour is a small group of four, and numbers don’t exceed ten people so that it can remain an intimate experience; this is much more of a walk and eat with friends vibe rather than the wrangling of a bunch of strangers in name tags.

An adult ticket for the St Kilda vegan tour will set you back $105 (or less if you book a group of 3 or more) and includes all of the food throughout the tour – and trust us – you won’t go hungry. We’d like to thank Jess and Melbourne Vegan Tours for the gift of hosting us on this tour. Check them out here: https://melbournevegantours.com

Here’s where we went:

First stop on our vegan tour of St Kilda is to Ground Yourself Cafe, which makes the cut thanks to it being voted as having the best coffee in Melbourne on BeanHunter.

We sample delicious delights from the Vegan Big Breakfast ($22.50) which includes fabulous scrambled tofu, fresh sauerkraut (this did not come from a tin!), a lovely mushroom jam and more. The house beans are rich and smokey, and a real stand out.

Other options on offer are a variety of cold bowls (all GF $17)), including an Acai Bowl and a Dragon Fruit Bowl (Superfood Pitaya (Dragon Fruit), Mango, Banana, and Passionfruit topped with Buckwheat Granola, Coconut Flakes and Fresh Fruit).

Most lunch items are also vegan and gluten-free, and include a Buddha Bowl ($17) and a Burrito Bowl ($19), although bacon from pigs, eggs, and dairy are also on the menu.

Melbourne Vegan Tour inclusion: Coffee or Prana chai, Breakfast board and smokey beans to share

Opening Hours:

After getting caffeinated, we next stopped by the store Empower – a social enterprise helping girls and women from Asia whose lives have been impacted by HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, and abuse. These women make all goods in the store with profits going back to them. Through rescue, rehabilitation, medical care, and ongoing nurture and skill development, these people have been able to turn their lives around, giving them a brighter future.

Melbourne Vegan Tour inclusion: 10% off all items in the store. (You may, of course, want to let them keep the 10% as a much-deserved donation)

Note: Not all items in-store are vegan

After a stroll down the leafiest part of Acland Street, our next stop is Trippy Taco's "southside" restaurant. It's a colourful space with more indoor seating (and perhaps more character) than it's "northside" sister restaurant, but the Mexican-style street food is just as good.

We indulged in the crowd-pleasing vegan Tofu Asada Burrito ($13.50) with its seasoned chargrilled tofu, salad, salsa, guacamole, lime, and maybe the odd sultana thrown in for good measure (don't worry, it works). The vegan nachos (small $13) are made with those yummy corn tortilla chips (no Dorritos or CCs here) and include all the vegan trimmings, including sour cream. Just keep in mind that most items aren't straight-up vegan – always ask for the vegan version.

Melbourne Vegan Tour inclusion: Half a Tofu Asada Burrito each and Vegan Nachos to share.

A refreshing walk along the foreshore brought us back into the heart of Acland Street and into Good Love, an all-vegan bar with food. It has a friendly and playful atmosphere (um, you can play Nintendo) and an exciting all vegan food menu – I'm talking a "Bacon and Egg Brioche" ($16) and banana blossom "Phish and Chips" ($23). YUM.

We all tried a slice of New York Pizza ($8), including a "Calabrese" with salami, napoli, cheese sauce and chilli oil, and an "Anti Pasto" with napoli, cheese sauce, feta, parmesan crisp, olives and rice paper prosciutto. The pizza dough has a pink tinge thanks to a waste-free approach of utilising excess beetroot from the kitchen – and it's of a more homely style than traditional pizza.

Melbourne Vegan Tour Inclusions: Cocktail or Soft Drink and a Slice of New York Pizza.

Billy & Lucy is a friendly all vegan, organic restaurant in Fitzroy.

Vegetables and whole foods are the heroes of the largely gluten free menu, with no mock meat to be found. Creative dishes include a ‘Roasted Mushroom Tahini Crust Tart’ ($18) which is an entree, but could pass as a main dish with its generous fresh garden salad and barbecued picked onions.

The much enjoyed ‘Sweet Potato Gnocchi’ ($23 GF) is a bit of a signature dish and includes confit tomato, maple spiced almonds and a thyme and cauliflower puree.

Billy & Lucy proudly support the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses by displaying a large “You Bet, They Die” banner out the front, and we think that’s pretty cool.

Union Kiosk is a hole in wall found in Causeway Lane which churns out delicious and creative vegan toasties. We tried the 'Veg Bolognese, mozzarella + garlic butter' ($7) and 'Mushroom, basil, spinach + mozzarella' ($7) and they are were top notch. They have indeed perfected the essential melty cheese and golden crust.

Sweet toasties are also a thing, including one consisting of 'Melted hazelnut vego bar'– yikes, dangerous! Vegan cookies and slices are baked daily, and coffee, turmeric lattes, matcha, chai etc are available in a variety of plant milks. Cows milk is still available for now, but will be phased out soon.

Note: Union Kiosk can be under the pump post any animal rallies held in the CBD, but cruelty-free toasties are worth the wait.

Raw food can be hit and miss (a mountain of zucchini 'pasta' comes to mind), but not at Nama. Try the 'No-meat feast' pizza (£14) with cultured cashew and chipotle cheese, semi dehydrated tomatoes, aubergine bacon, portobello sausage, crispy shallots and ketchup or the 'Full English' breakfast (£12), which includes cashew and coconut scrambled ‘eggs’ on artisan raw 'toast'.

2. Temple of Hackney - Vegan Fried Chicken Shop

Whether seitan gives you a 'mud guts' or not, it's just the rules that vegans visiting London have to swing by here. A '2 piece' with chipotle mayo (£5) will be enough delicious regret for some. The 'Temple spicy burger' with crispy fillet, cheese, coleslaw, jalapeños with hot sauce and chipotle mayo (£6) is another option, however it's definitely not a 'neat eat' – keep the napkins handy.

Tibits is changing the reputation of buffet restaurants, one piled up plate at a time. Stop by for a smorgasbord of fresh and interesting hot and cold vegan options to load onto your plate, which is then weighed and priced accordingly. Try a comforting hot lemon and ginger drink here too; especially useful if jet lag is still lurking.

Proudly declaring themselves as London’s first Vegetarian and Vegan pub, their signature dish is 'Tofish and Chips' (£11.95) – tofu wrapped in seaweed, marinated in lemon and battered in vegan beer batter served with peas, chips and vegan tartar sauce. It's crispy and comforting but would be hard pressed to rival Melbourne's Cornish Arm's. Vegan shortcrust organic pie 'n' mash (£10) flavours are aplenty, with the 'mushroom & leek' (paracini mushrooms and chestnuts in a creamy sauce) sounding pretty damn tempting.

Call ahead to make sure the kitchen is open: 020 7437 5920. We found Mondays to be unreliable so have not listed them open on that day.

If you're staying here (they also do a vegan full english breakfast), take advantage of the opportunity to pre-book your afternoon tea and you'll save around £12 each.

Spiral Beans is Yuka Mikayama's reincarnation of her homestyle Japanese cafe Disco Beans, and is a collaboration with Spiral Foods, who's greatest hits include the famed Bonsoy.

The focus at Spiral Beans is very much about traditional Japanese flavours within a predominantly organic vegan menu, with gluten free, raw, fermented and macrobiotic options to boot.

The 'Okara Nuggets' (gluten free $11.5) are shallow fried spiced chickpea nuggets, and have our approval. Funnily enough, okara defines as soy pulp or tofu dregs (!), but never fear as this dish proves fried tofu dregs to be very delicious!

Yuka's version of 'Nasu Dengaku' (gluten free $11.50) or deep fried eggplant, is cut up into bite sized pieces making it easier to eat and share than the usual whole eggplant half we are used to.

As a hats off to Disco Beans, the much loved Okonomyaki (gluten free $19.5) remains on the menu, and is presented sizzling in a teppan. The sweet sauce and vegan mayo are both made by hand and from scratch and Spiral Beans are not afraid to declare that their version is better than any okonomyaki found in Osaka. I personally would have liked a bit more vegan mayo – slather it on I say!

The 'Soba Salad' ($18.5) is tossed in a wonderfully balanced homemade balsamic dressing, with greens and baked tempeh and was my favourite.

There are vegan desserts, including 'Coconut Milk Kuzu Pudding' along with an impressive range of high quality Japanese green tea. Japanese tea ceremonies are hosted and cooking classes are also available.
