TOFWD* (*the organic food and wine deli) - 28 Degraves St, Melbourne

Sometimes we're at a loss when trying to think of where to have an easy vegan lunch in the CBD (apart from the time-tested choice of Lord of the Fries) but now we'll always remember TOFWD* (*The Organic Food and Wine Deli) for their array of delicious and healthy meal options.

TOFWD have a range of pre-prepared organic salads, pies, sandwiches/wraps, nori, sweets and cakes. Almost everything is vegetarian and there are plenty of well labelled vegan options, as well as wheat free, sugar free and gluten free options. Seating is predominantly outdoors with a few seats at the indoor counter too.

I tried an organic vegan vegie & dahl pie with salad and chutney and my sidekick tried the tofu and mushroom pie with salad and chutney (both $12). The highlight for me was actually the awesome injection of salad goodness that came on the side - which had a lovely apple cider vinaigrette and was so fresh and wholesome (I clearly needed the vitamin hit!). The pie itself was made with maize pastry which made it gluten free, and it had a little spice to it. Without the awesome chutney to accompany it however, it may have been just a little bland. The tofu and mushroom pie was made with a rye sourdough pastry (wheat-free) and received much higher praise for it's flavour - it was quite delicious. Next time, I'd also like to try the tofu & carrot brown rice nori.

We couldn't leave without taking a couple of sweets for the road and the organic raw lemon cheesecake ($6.50 & gluten/sugar free) along with a cashew brownie ($4.50 & gluten free) got the nod. It's not often that you feel healthier having had a dessert - but the raw lemon cheesecake just doesn't feel bad for you! It's lemony and light and not too sweet, whilst the chocolate brownie was rich without being sickly.

I also had a coffee which was about as good as a soy latte could get having being made with NatureSoy. (As mentioned in a previous post I'm quite the Bonsoy loyalist).

  1. Wow, I haven't been there in ages and I just remembered having a vegan pie and something desserty loooong before I became vegan, and thinking wow this vegan stuff isn't half bad. I'll have to head back there to see what goodies they have :)

  2. It all looks pretty good, doesn't it veganopoulous! There was an asian brown rice salad with tempeh and ginger, sesame and tamari that I'd like to try next time and I love the idea of brown rice nori so I'm looking forward to trying that. :-)

  3. I had the quinioa, beetroot and sultana salad here with a side of beetroot chips - absolutely in love!
    Do they serve breakfasts?

  4. Sounds delicious Ally - I know they are open for breakfast, but not sure what's on offer other than organic museli. If I find out, I'll report back :-)
